A Prologue to Love
Published in Paperback by Bantam Books (September, 1983)
Author: Taylor Caldwell
Average review score:

Would read 100 times.
I picked this book off the college library shelf 25 years ago on a Friday afternoon. I only left my desk when absolutely necessary until I finished reading the book. Without a doubt, the best book I have ever read. Atlas Shrugged runs a close second.

Read between the Lines
I first read this book as a young teen and was impressed, not realizing how much subtle information was in the book about the state of the world.
Over the years I have read this book several times, and just recently found it again. I can only say that if you are open minded enough; you will be amazed at the information in this book about the new world order.

TRASH..I LOVE IT!
An exceedingly long trashy novel about a miserly woman ,how she came to be that way,and the realization of her mistakes that allows her to die peacefully.A great message, but could have been shorter. This book is full of wisdom and insight into the psyche of her characters. It's a shame she allowed herself to get trapped into writing in a genre that most critics overlook and don't take seriously.I feel she was a very gifted author who in a sense wasted her talents.

The Ryrie Study Bible: New American Standard Translation: With Introductions, Annotations, Outlines, Marginal References, Harmony of the Gospels
Published in Hardcover by Moody Publishers (February, 1995)
Author: Charles Caldwell Ryrie
Average review score:

An excellent Study Bible!
We've used the Ryrie Study Bible since the early 80s. It's excellent for everyone who's interested in learning the Word of God in a more specific way. In the back of this Bible, there are important theological topics regarding the key doctrines of the Bible. Also the annotations, notes and everything else are arranged for easy understanding, and the information is precise. A great number of important subjects can be found and referenced quickly. It's always exciting to open this Bible. It's certainly money well spent. And every student will be spiritually enriched by the wealth of information found in the Ryrie Study Bible.

best quality and best clarity
I would highly recomend this version to anyone who wishes to do any serious study of the Word. Two key things to look for in selecting a good translation are quality and clarity. The NASB-U has plenty of both. Read it, study it, know it, learn it, live it!

Comparable with Life Application and NIV Study Bibles
Fantastic, in-depth, footnotes, cross-references, concordance, with quality comparable to the best-selling Life Application and NIV Study Bibles. Footnotes written by one man, instead of a large team of scholars, resulting in footnotes that relate to each other, from book to book. Recommended by several clerks at our bookstore, Christian Book and Gift, in Lawrence, KS.

Trouble in July
Published in Hardcover by Beehive Press, The (01 April, 1977)
Author: Erskine Caldwell
Average review score:

AMERICAN TERRORISM
Sheriff McCurtain has a problem. It appears that a negro boy has been accused of raping a white gal. White folk in Flowery Branch can't allow that to happen and so a lynch mob forms. In times of crisis such as this the sheriff does what is politically correct; he goes fishing. This time McCurtain finds himself the fish on the hook who just can't get away no matter how hard he tries.

In this masterful piece of literature, Erskine Caldwell unravels before our eyes the pathology and terrorism of lynching in the south. No one could do a better job for Caldwell is a white southerner who grew up in an environment in which lynching was a common form of entertainment. Trouble in July goes deep into the psychology of what makes common white men into brutes and those who work for them into victims.

Like many men McCurtain finds it easier to ignore what is going on rather than try to contain the trouble. The more that he tries to wash his hands of the affair the worse it gets. Those in power see the political and economical ramifications of the act and call on him to jail the accused. After all,McCurtain is their political puppet to be manipulated at will.

Such an intriguing drama exposes the hypocrasy of the law and shows how fear can make even the most honest of men betray their basic values of justice. Fear reduces the "negro" community into one that becomes terrorized and beaten into submission. Fear allows the upholder of the law to allow things to get out of hand merely because he wants to be voted into office next year.

Although the characters are simple; their motives, thoughts and values are complex as they struggle with their consciences in carrying out their heinous acts of cowardliness. You have laid out before you the ugliness of a system that dehumanizes everyone involved. The foreward by Bryant Simon in this edition gives us the background which gave rise to this novel. According to Simon, the author has made a significant transition in his work by revealing the south's racism in a straightforward manner. He doesn't hold back the punches.

Caldwell has given us a masterpiece about American Terrorism at its zenith in the United States. You will be repulsed, angered, and yes, fearful as you follow the crowd. Our author won't let us become mere voyeurs. We become the lynch mob, the negroes, the soiled politicians and all that is sick in southern terrorism. Read this outstanding work, feel the terror and learn about overcoming the mob psychology in your life. I was deeply moved by Trouble In July and you will too.

Caldwell at his best. I couldn't put the book down.
Hatred, bigotry, lust, lynchings and mayhem all take place in the ole south. After reading trouble in July I ran out and bought "A PLACE CALLED ESTHERVILLE", here again Caldwell displays just how good his writing & story telling skills are. I read "TROUBLE IN JULY ABOUT 13 YRS. AGO. The book was lent to a friend and never returned. I was delighted when I saw that the book had been reprinted, I plan on purchasing another copy. This book has stayed on my mind for years. I wish Caldwell was still alive so he could write more of these novels with stories from the land of dixie. Trouble in july will move you and bring you close to tears, trust me and keep a hankie close at hand.

read it years ago misplaced copy. you can't put it down .
one of the best books written about the ole south filled with bigory, passion, rape, hatred, i lent this book to a friend about 10 yrs. ago have been trying to get a new copy since then. erskine caldwell is at his best. don't miss this one

Arm and the Darkness
Published in Hardcover by Amereon Ltd (June, 1974)
Author: Taylor Caldwell
Average review score:

The Eternal battle of good versus evil
It is a unique experience to read a period piece and feel that when you're finished you have learned things that can easily be applied to your own world. Connecting history like that to the present is very amazing.
Set in pre-revolutionary France in the days of Cardinal Richelieu, Taylor Caldwell brings to life the man the forever changed France in ways surpassed by none other than perhaps Napolean Bonaparte. Each character comes from opposing religions, ideals, and childhood experiences and they influence eachother in very profound ways.
Besides feeling connected to a period so distant from us, this novel explores the possibilities of human interaction and how much a person can change. If you enjoy history as well as exploring our own humanity and relationships we forge, you will not be disappointed by this book. The beginning is very exciting then it staggers a bit, but it picks up right till the end. Truly, a great book.

Taylor Caldwell delivers her customary high quality
Caldwell sets this novel in 17th century France, when the persecutions of the French Protestant Huguenots is about to resume after a hiatus of tolerance. She offers her usual vivid portraits of characters, especially the wily Cardinal Richelieu, and a vivid depiction of the bitterness of the poverty of Paris peasants. The novel culminates in the dreadful siege of Rochelle, which led to the Huguenots' mass exodus to the New World, where they founded New Rochelle. Caldwell's usual flaws are evident here--why is everone so "inexorable," so bitter, so alientated, so all-or-nothing in their approach? Still, this novel is a highly entertaining account of this turbulent period in French history, and Caldwell's many fans won't be disappointed.

Balancing the Christian Life
Published in Paperback by Moody Press (August, 1969)
Author: Charles Caldwell Ryrie
Average review score:

Spiritual Disciplines for Christian Living
A biblically based look at spirituality, which the author defines as the goal of all Christian living. The book looks at some basic biblical concepts, personal responsiblities, and practical issues affecting Christians today. The study guide in the 25th Anniversary edition really complements the text by providing an opportunity to evaluate your own spiritual life topic by topic. It even allows room for those who might disagree with some of Dr. Ryrie's conclusions to develop a scriptural rationale for their positions.

Also recommended: Knowing God, J.I. Packer So Great Salvation, C. Ryrie True Spirituality, Francis Schaeffer

well balanced
Dr. Ryrie, a careful, seasoned theologian, was written this book in a warm, personable, devotional style that lends itself well to readers who are being introduced to theological study. I have found his chapters "Money and the Love of God"(8), and "Temptation"(13) to be particularly helpful to the 15-25 crowd. His chapter on dedication (7) has been useful to a wide range of readers. When looking for follow-up/supplimentary discipleship material, this book has frequently scratched where this pastor has itched. I would happily recommend this resource.

The Brains of Rats
Published in Hardcover by Scream Pr (September, 1990)
Authors: Michael Blumlein and T.M. Caldwell
Average review score:

Amazing
I'd never heard of michael blumlein before I read The Brains of Rats. I picked a copy up at a local library - and i've never been so fascinated. Blumlein has a wonderful writing style and his stories are some of the most bizarre pieces of fiction ever. This is one of the best authors of dark fiction that I've ever found.

Astonishing
The short stories in Michael Blumlein's "The Brains of Rats" are very difficult to classify by genre. In another sense, they're quite easy to identify; they're all very well written and fascinating. Though the book's spine identifies the collection as "horror," that label applies only to some of the stories. The title story, for example, deals with the questions of gender and gender identity. My personal favorite story is the second, a little opus entitled "Tissue Ablation and Variant Regeneration: A Case Report."

Written in a clinical manner, this story is heavy in medical terminology and describes an operation on a conscious albeit paralyzed man. Blumlein's style here is both complex and powerful. Though the writing seems to attempt to give maximum attention to the clinical nature of the operation, there is a subtext of the feelings of the man on the table; it is almost impossible not to empathize with the patient, to feel his agony to at least some degree.

The stories in "The Brains of Rats" are extraordinarily diverse, from relatively benign fantasy at times to the significantly darker aspects of "Tissue Ablation." Almost without exception, they are fascinating and engrossing. This book is highly recommended for those who enjoy well-written, short fiction of a speculative nature.

The best contracting book I have seen!
This book is well organized with a huge amount of helpful information. The author takes you step-by-step through the building process. After reading this book, you will have the knowledge needed to plan and complete your own construction project. This book should be considered required reading for anyone interested in construction.

The Courthouse and the Depot: The Architecture of Hope in an Age of Despair: A Narrative Guide to Railroad Expansion and Its Impact on Public Architecture in Georgia, 1833-1910
Published in Hardcover by Mercer University Press (December, 2001)
Author: Wilber W. Caldwell
Average review score:

Superb historical railroad station architecture survey.
The Courthouse And The Depot: A Narrative Guide To Railroad Expansion And Its Impact On Public Architecture In Georgia 1833-1910 by Wilber W. Caldwell is an exhaustive catalogue of 19th century public architecture in Georgia and all the railroad lines that criss-crossed the state during this period. A wealth of Deep South history illustrated throughout with black and white photographs. The Courthouse And The Depot uses the unique framework of architecture to substantially narrate a significant stretch of Georgian state history, and how the coming of the railroad changed everything for the future. A fascinating and superbly presented wealth of information about changing times over a century ago, The Courthouse And The Depot is highly recommended reading for American history, architecture, and railroading reading lists and reference collections.

An essential collection of Georgia architectural history
Mr. Caldwell, an "independent" historian, has provided us an exaustive and accurate compendium of the architectural and social history of Georgia in the 19th century. He has reviewed and cross-referenced the hundreds of sketchy local histories in Georgia and has noted the background and history of the creation of every Georgia county and railroad from 1800-1911, and how the railroad shaped the aspirations or distrust of Georgia's communities.

He notes how the influence of Northern "carpetbaggers" led to the development of many of Ga's reconstruction railroads and the erection of its many distinctive high-style courthouses. The influence of Bostonian H.H. Richardson on Georgia architects Gloucke and Bruce & Morgan is prevalent as well.

Interestingly, Mr. Caldwell is intent on revealing what he sees as the truth behind the "myths" of the Old and New South and how those myths are related through railroad development (the equivalent of a 19th century interstate highway) and public architecture. His conclusion that the creation of post-civil war railroads and the promise of Northern investment was nothing more than a sham in most cases is very unique and interesting and deserves further study.

This book is less about the specifics of architecture but basically provides a clearer view of rural southern history, and provides a useful collection of the local history of 159+ counties in Georgia. There are a few spelling errors, and could have used a few color plates, but the book is well made.

This book is a must for any Georgia architect, landscape architect, and historic preservationist. It also could be of use to a few politicians in order for them to better understand the background of thier own GA communities. Of course, armchair historians and lovers of southern history will enjoy it as well.

Dynasty of Death
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins Publishers (05 July, 1984)
Author: Taylor Caldwell
Average review score:

A very powerful look at the growth of an armaments giant.
I have been a fan of Taylor Caldwell since first reading 'Bright Flows the River'. 'Dynasty of Death' is a powerful book which chronicles the rise of the armaments industry from a one room shack into the giant that it is today. If you want to understand the enormous reach of this powerful industry, you cannot miss reading 'Dynasty of Death'.

#1 of a trilogy. If you read any of them you must read all.
This set of three books Dynasty of Death, Eagles Gather and The Final Hour were published in England in the 1940's and not allowed to be published here until the 70's or 80's. I have read almost all of her books and these 3 are my favorites. In my opinion she is one of the best authors of our time.
